Sydney FC continue “worrying start” whilst Western Sydney prove their premiership credentials

2023-12-18T12:35+11:00

SEN’s The Global Game host and Sydney FC legend Alex Brosque has labeled his former side’s start to the season as “worrying” after a heavy defeat to rivals Melbourne Victory in Round 8.

The Sky Blues lost 3-0 in ‘The Big Blue’ and despite having 69% possession and more than double the amount of passes as their opponent (617-293), Sydney FC only registered three shots on target and were soundly beaten, falling to 10th on the ladder.

Ufuk Talay’s men have sunk to a 2-0-6 record on the season and Brosque believes time is quickly running out for Sydney FC to turn their season around.

“It is worrying when you look around the league and other teams aren’t playing their best but still picking up results,” Brosque said on SEN 1170.

“Wellington Phoenix haven’t been anywhere near their best, they haven’t controlled any games but they are finding ways to still get something out of the game.

“Sydney, whilst they are controlling the game and playing reasonably well in possession, they are not clinical at all

“They don’t look threatening going forward at all and that’s why I’m worried.

“The longer you leave (your run) to start picking up points, the harder it gets and the more you are chasing.

“We need to start seeing more (and) they need to start scoring and scoring quickly.”

Conversely, the Western Sydney Wanderers continue to fire on all cylinders with a 1-0 win over Adelaide United to remain in the top two on the ladder.

Brosque said unlike Sydney FC, the Wanderers are playing like a well-oiled machine on a consistent basis.

“They’ve got a very good squad and they were in control of that match,” Brosque added.

“They’ve got a very good defence, attack and midfield that find ways to find results.

“They lost a lot of players from last year but they have recruited well and have had a good pre-season.

“There's a bit more about them this season and they are a genuine contender.”

The Wanderers travel across the ditch to take on Wellington in Round 9 whilst Sydney FC return home and will host Western United on Saturday night.
