Jenkins and Cooney name their Mount Rushmore of AFL defenders since 2010

2023-12-21T16:45+11:00

Josh Jenkins and Adam Cooney have named their Mount Rushmore’s of AFL defenders since 2010.

The duo picked four players each that they think have been the best of the best in defensive 50 over the last 14 seasons.

Jenkins named some apologies who came close but ultimately missed out on his top four in Jeremy McGovern, Alex Rance, Michael Jamieson, Daniel Merrett and Dustin Fletcher.

Cooney left out Corey Enright and Matthew Scarlett, with the duo coming close to making his quartet.

Check out their top four key defenders since 2010 below!

Jenkins’ Mount Rushmore

4 - Luke McPharlin

“I think this would probably be an unassuming pick,” Jenkins said.

“But a player who gave me a right royal touch-up a few times from the Freo Dockers was Luke McPharlin.

“He was underrated.”

3 - Harry Taylor

“At three a player who I played on a lot … it’s Harry Taylor.

“He retired in 2020. He played a whole decade (since 2010).”

2 - Shannon Hurn

“I wanted to include a modern-day defender.

“Particularly since 2010, a modern-day defender needs to defend but also create.

“I’ve got a premiership captain, a thumping kick, a really strong one-on-one player.

“At number two, that’s Shannon Hurn.”

1 - Corey Enright

“Number one for me is a guy I never played on but played against a fair bit.

“We were always worrying about him. He played forever, was incredibly consistent, almost never beaten and as durable as they come.

“His name is Corey Enright.”

Cooney’s Mount Rushmore

4 - Jeremy McGovern

“I had Jeremy McGovern in mine at number four,” Cooney said.

“He can win his one-on-ones and he also provides some terrific intercept work and has done it very consistently over a long period of time.”

3 - Alex Rance

“I had Alex Rance in there.

“He just dominated that period of time. He's got a handful of All-Australians.”

2 - Tom Stewart

“I had Tom Stewart in at number two.

“He's pretty good one-on-one, he very rarely loses his one-on-ones.

“But just his importance to Geelong's structure, I think (is huge). He’s one of the main reasons why they've had so much success over the last six or seven years.

“He’s got five out of seven All-Australians in the since he's come into the competition.”

1 - Luke Hodge

“At number one, I had the four-time premiership player, three-time premiership captain, dual Norm Smith Medallist and that is Luke Hodge.

“He played in the back half. He had most of his success in the back half.

“I don't know any defenders with a resume like that.”
