Brownlow Medallist a “top 10 all-time” player, according to former teammate

Former Collingwood forward Alex Fasolo believes Dane Swan is one of the 10 greatest footy players in history.

Fasolo played 101 games for the Magpies between 2011 and 2018, which included the final five full seasons of Swan’s career.

The star midfielder won the Brownlow Medal in 2011 and played 258 games for Collingwood.

“At his best, I’ve never seen anyone move with such power and ferocity when going at the ball,” Fasolo told SEN’s Dwayne’s World.

“He probably lacked that real polish that some (of the all-time greats had) – and that’s probably why he’s not considered one of the great-great-greats of all-time, and the defensive side of his game wasn’t huge.

“But I don’t care what anyone says. In my eyes, he is a top 10 all-time.”

Swan, as well as teammates Alan Didak, Ben Johnson, Chris Tarrant, Heath Shaw, Dale Thomas and more, were known for their off-field exploits as much as their on-field performance.

Fasolo joined the club at their peak back in 2011 and loved tagging along with the veterans.

“When I got there in 2011 I was right in the depths of the rat pack and gee it was fun. It’s fair to say the club might be slightly different nowadays,” Fasolo said.

“I loved it. I was in there, a starry-eyed kid … I loved Chris Tarrant, Alan Didak, Ben Johnson – I loved Swanny and obviously I was lucky enough to go out and have a few nights out with them.

“They were also amazing trainers. They taught me how to play the game as well, but we played pretty hard off the field as well, which was fun.”
