Former Giants skipper’s big call about star midfielder’s future

2024-01-17T09:35+11:00

Former GWS captain Phil Davis has made a series of bold predictions relating to Giants young gun Tom Green.

The 22-year-old is fast emerging as a potential superstar of the game given what he has delivered for the Giants of late, particularly over the last two seasons.

Green was impressive in 2022 when finishing third in GWS’ best and fairest, but truly broke out last year when he topped the AFL for average disposals and contested possessions.

Those efforts saw him finish equal second in the best and fairest alongside Stephen Coniglio and behind Toby Greene.

The gun midfielder made an immediate impression on Davis after he was drafted in 2019, so much so that the club’s old joint skipper feels he will go on to become a multiple All-Australian who will captain the Giants.

Davis also believes the Canberra native should be targeted by new AFL franchise in Tasmania before they enter the competition in 2028.

“Tom Green came in and took it to our mids,” Davis said on SEN Breakfast.

“That was after the 2019 season. We had just come off a Grand Final, our mids were stacked, he was playing on the ‘B’ side and he was taking it to them all pre-season.

“He’ll be a multiple All-Australian, he’ll captain the Giants, he’s got a big future.

“I would have thought that Tasmania would be circling his name. He’s from Canberra so maybe they can lure a story around that.

“He’s going to be a very special player. He and Finn Callaghan are going to be an almighty one-two punch.”

Green debuted for the Giants in 2020 and has since played 67 games in the orange and charcoal, averaging 24.9 disposals, 12 contested possessions and 6 clearances.

He made the 44-man All-Australian squad last year and also picked up the Best Finals Player award alongside Connor Idun and Lachie Whitfield in the Giants’ Preliminary Final season.
