Three-time premiership forward outlines his new role with GWS

Three-time AFL premiership player Cameron Mooney has outlined his new gig with GWS.

The former Geelong star has taken on an advisory role with the Giants which will see him work closely with the club’s marking forwards.

Mooney, who won two flags with the Cats and one with North Melbourne, will be working with the Giants on a part-time basis.

“I got a call just before Christmas,” Mooney, who is originally from the Riverina, said on SEN’s The Run Home.

“In a very part-time commitment I’ll just be getting up there and doing a little bit of contested marking with the key forwards, and maybe a little bit of stuff with their defenders if they want to pop over and say hello.”

Mooney had his first session at the club recently and made the mistake of thinking he could still match it with the current day players, biting off more than he could chew.

“I went up last week and I did some bumping with them, we got the bag out and we were bumping away, I was with Jesse Hogan and big ‘Briggsy’ (Kieren Briggs), and I put the bag down, I thought, ‘You know what, I’ve still got this’,” he added.

“Well, my god, the worst decision I’ve ever made. I thought I was 24 again. I was rag-dolled, I was thrown around, I’ve got bruises all over my body, I’ve got scratch marks, I actually had to jump into the cold tank afterwards just to give my legs a little bit of a going over.

“I’ve been up there once and I’ll go up there every few weeks just to say hello. I’ll drop a bit of work particularly with their young forwards in the contested marking space.”

The 221-game former Roo and Cat also highlighted the emerging GWS forwards who have impressed him so far.

“Aaron Cadman has a lot of talent as we know, Jake Riccardi (looks good), and Callum Brown, don’t rest on how strong this kid is as well,” he said.

“It’s really exciting, a lot of fun, it’s very part-time, but I’m looking forward to it.

“They are a very good club.”

Mooney has a clear connection to the Giants through his two-time premiership teammate at Geelong, Jimmy Bartel, who is football director at GWS.
