Sabalenka claims second straight Australian Open title with comprehensive victory over Zheng

2024-01-28T10:27+11:00

Aryna Sabalenka has become the first female in over 11 years to secure back-to-back Australian Open titles after a 6-2, 6-3 win over Qinwen Zheng.

Sealing the classy win in just under an hour, Sabalenka completed a sensational turnaround from the Brisbane International, where she went down to Elena Rybakina in the decider.

Speaking after the win, Sabalenka threw a playful jab at her team but credited them for putting her in the position to defend her Australian Open title.

“To my team, wow. I put a bit of pressure on them after the Brisbane final and we did after the Brisbane final and we did a bit better in this one,” she said.

“Thank you so much for being by my side, no matter what. I think I have everything. I have forgotten what I wanted to say but without you, I would not be able to achieve so much in this sport.

“Thank you for everything you are doing for me. I will keep repeating the same thing, thank you for everything you have done for me.

“Without me, you would not be that good as well, let’s accept that.”

The Men’s side of the tournament concludes on Sunday night with Jannic Sinner looking to take down Daniil Medvedev at 7:30pm.
