“Some of them are wrong”: The AFL over/under win totals that caught Kane Cornes' eye

2024-01-31T08:41+11:00

The over/under markets for the 2024 AFL season have been revealed and a few immediately caught Kane Cornes’ eye.

Sportsbet has put out its projected wins for each team, with reigning premiers Collingwood sitting at 16.5.

Brisbane is next at 15.5, Melbourne and GWS at 14.5 and Carlton at 13.5. Down the other end, West Coast and North Melbourne are at 4.5.

Richmond is the team that immediately stood out to Cornes, sitting at 10.5.

The Tigers won 10 games in 2023, dealing with the chaos that was Damien Hardwick’s departure from the club and Tom Lynch only playing four games.

Cornes doesn’t see Richmond improving in 2024 under new coach Adem Yze.

“Some of them really stand out to me and some of them are wrong,” he told SEN Breakfast.

“The market has got Richmond winning 10.5 games this year. Give me the under on that every day of the week.

“The prospect of Lynch playing 20 games is slim, Josh Gibcus is probably the same, Dylan Grimes is injured, Dion Prestia is always injured.

“I agree that if they can get their veteran players playing 20 games, but it rarely happens, unfortunately.

“10.5 wins for the Tigers, I think it’s going to be hard for them to get above 10.5.

“They won 10 last year. There was a lot of instability at the footy club, so new coach bounce perhaps, but if I’m just looking at it, that one was staring at me in the face that Richmond aren’t going to win 11 games this year.”

Gold Coast at 10.5 wins also interests Cornes, saying they have everything they need to outperform that in 2024 under triple premiership coach Hardwick.

“Gold Coast is set at 10.5. Give me the over on that every day of the week. They have the softest draw you have ever seen. They have a coach who has won three flags, their list is stacked – they get to 12 wins, easy and play finals,” he said.

The Port Adelaide great also feels the Kangaroos’ 4.5 is surely too low.

“For me, North Melbourne, their over/under is set at 4.5 – if they’re not winning five games this year, something is really wrong,” he added.

“North at 4.5, if they don’t get to five wins, then the whole place is falling apart.”

Sam Edmund ran his eyes over the numbers, with Brisbane and Hawthorn standing out to him.

“There was one other one that caught my eye – Brisbane,” Edmund said.

“They won 17 games last year, I’d contend that they’re going to be better again, and they’re set at 15.5. I’ve got them going north of that.

“I might be overly optimistic about this side, but they won seven games last year. I’d like to think Hawthorn will win more than 8.5.

“They’re going to improve by more than a game and a half.”
