Damien Oliver set to backflip on retirement plans

2024-02-02T09:40+11:00

SENTrack’s Gareth Hall has revealed that Damien Oliver will return to the saddle just months after he announced his retirement.

Regarded as the greatest jockey of all time, Oliver was seen at the Flemington jumpouts on Friday morning.

“There’s some mail coming out of Flemington, I’ve texted a few people there that manage Damien Oliver and they told me ‘watch this space’,” Hall said on SENTrack.

“Why else would he be out of the jumpouts?

“There is a comeback on the horizon, he will make a comeback.

“I don’t know where but he’ll be making a comeback shortly, he is making his way back to the saddle and will be riding somewhere soon.”

Oliver’s final ride on December 16 at Ascot was a fairy tale of sorts.

The West Australian came from the rear of the field to score in breathtaking fashion aboard Munhamek in the race named after him - the Damien Oliver Gold Rush.

It was a remarkable way to end his career, which will be reestablished at the age of 51.

Oliver will head to Saudi Arabia for a one-off ride in the Saudi international jockey's challenge.
