Gold Coast Titans recruit Keenan Palasia has given an eye-opening yet humorous view on new coach Des Hasler, compared to his experiences last year working with Kevvie Walters at the Brisbane Broncos.
Palasia enjoyed a breakout year in 2023, becoming a mainstay in the Broncos’ pack whilst averaging career highs in tackle breaks, total and average running metres during the side’s Grand Final run.
The 27-year-old was an unfortunate causality to the Broncos’ salary cap squeeze but could very well prove to be one of the best under-the-radar signings for the 2024 season.
After his first two months of training with his new side, Palasia opened up on the major differences of learning from the coaching methods of Walters to Hasler.
“Kevvie was really good with bringing the team together with comradery and making us gel,” Palasia told SENQ Breakfast.
“He knew how to handle every personality.
“Des is more just hands on, (he) kind of scares you into doing what he wants.
“It works, he’s been to five (Grand Finals), so it’s working.”
Palasia, a Palm Beach local, admitted the move back to the Gold Coast was well received by his family as he looks to add much-needed experience to a youthful Titans side.
“It did feel like I was coming home, I think my mum was the most excited about it all even though I was only up the motorway where I was living,” Palasia added.
“Now she gets to see my dogs whenever she wants and I think that’s the most important part for her.
“Another year of experience under my belt and my first finals series last year so hopefully I can carry that experience into this young team.
“I think we’re the second youngest team in the comp, so a bit of experience is going to help.”
Palasia is expected to make his Titans debut in his side’s first pre-season hit out against the Dolphins on February 18th.
