Why Swans footy boss expects young forward to continue getting “better and better”

2024-02-04T16:19+11:00

Sydney footy boss Leon Cameron is excited about Logan McDonald heading into the 2024 season.

Entering his fourth season, McDonald already has kicked 56 goals from 44 career games, and many are expecting the former No.4 draft pick to explode in the coming years.

While expectations are high, Cameron is preaching patience regarding McDonald despite expecting him to get better and better in the coming years in a forward line without retired superstar Lance Franklin.

“He comes into his fourth year,” Cameron told SEN Afternoons.

“I think we’re being really mindful (of not setting expectations too high).

“When I was at the Giants, there was always that pressure on these high draft pick young talls.

“We've got to be mindful he’s going into his fourth year, but he's had a really good pre-season. He's a massive young fella, he works extremely hard.

“He's really popular amongst the group. You can see that in my short time here at the Swans, you can see he's such a popular young kid.

“Look, I just think he'll just get better and better as he goes on.”

McDonald will be a key member of a promising forward line in 2024, with the likes of Tom Papley, Isaac Heeney and Will Hayward at his feet while receiving tall support from Joel Amartey and Hayden McLean.

While Cameron likes the current look of the forward set-up, he wouldn’t be shocked if a more unknown Swan popped up to bring some genuine goal-kicking power in 2024.

“You mentioned Papley, you mentioned Heeney,” Cameron said.

“These guys have been around for a long time and Joel Amartey - he's had a strong and solid pre-season as well as Hayden McLean and these sorts of guys.

“No doubt what happens is these guys are preparing themselves for the year ahead, but someone always pops up whether it's at our club or somewhere else.

“That's the good thing about the start of a new year. Someone going to pop up from nowhere. (Errol) Gulden had such a great year as a winger and inside mid … does he become a goal kicker with his magnificent left foot?

“There are so many players out there that can surprise you at the start of the year.”

Sydney kicks off their 2024 campaign with an Opening Round clash against Melbourne at the SCG on Thursday, March 7.
