“I’m 100 per cent sure”: Nicks set to sign new deal with Adelaide

2024-02-16T07:15+11:00

Matthew Nicks is set to sign a new deal with the Adelaide Crows, according to SEN SA’s Kym Dillon.

The 48-year-old coach is out of contract later this year when the extension he signed in late 2021 expires.

Dillon understands that Nicks is likely to put pen to a fresh deal in the coming weeks, expecting the former Sydney Swan to be locked away at least before Round 1 of the 2024 season.

“Matthew Nicks will be signed up within the next two weeks. I’m 95 per cent sure,” Dillon said on SEN SA’s The Run Home.

“If it doesn’t happen in the next two weeks, I’m 100 per cent sure it will happen before the first game (Round 1).”

How long will Nicks sign for?

“Two (years), I would imagine, so that will give him three (more),” Dillon added.

That will take Nicks through until the end of 2026.

“I thought it would have been done before (now),” Dillon continued.

“But (maybe they’re thinking), ‘look, get through another pre-season’. Now is the right time.

“The people I’ve spoken to that should know, (are saying) the next two weeks.”

The Crows have improved incrementally with Nicks at the helm, going from three wins in 2020 to 11 in 2023 when they narrowly missed finals.

They meet Port Adelaide in a practice match at Alberton on February 23 before taking on West Coast in the AFL Community Series at Hisense Stadium in West Adelaide on March 2.

Adelaide’s 2024 season proper kicks off against Gold Coast at Heritage Bank Stadium on March 16.
