Cats' 2024 prospects take a dip with Guthrie's heavy injury blow revealed

2024-02-27T11:51+11:00

Geelong’s hopes of rebounding back up the ladder in 2024 have copped an early blow with the news Cam Guthrie is out for 8-10 weeks with a quad injury.

Guthrie limped off in the opening minute of Geelong’s eventual win over Carlton in a pre-season scratch match, with the Cats providing an update five days later.

“The prognosis indicates Cam will be sidelined for 8-10 weeks, Cam is the ultimate professional who will attack his rehab diligently with the support of our medical team and we look forward to having back on the field in the early part of the season,” footy boss Andrew Mackie said in a statement.

Guthrie only managed four games last season after succumbing to a toe injury. His availability in 2024 was a key reason for optimism at Kardinia Park of returning to September action, with Chris Scott’s midfield particularly exposed last year following Joel Selwood's retirement.

Guthrie, 31, has played 236 games for Geelong since debuting in 2011 and is a dual best and fairest winner.

An eight-week injury timeline could have him fully fit before Round 7 against Carlton, although he may be given some matches in the VFL given at that point, he won’t have played AFL for over 12 months.
