Crows CEO expecting aggressive trade period approach to continue after targeting Oliver, Petty

Adelaide CEO Tim Silvers has hinted that his club will remain quite active in the coming trade periods.

The Crows didn’t end up having a huge say in the 2023 trade period, but it didn’t come from a lack of trying. They were linked with attempting to lure Melbourne star Clayton Oliver and teammate Harrison Petty.

Of course, the Dees held firm on both in the end.

“We look at all players who are going to improve our list,” Silvers told SEN’s Sportsday when asked about going after Oliver.

“Harrison Petty was another player that we certainly looked at, but we didn’t want to make trades for the sake of trades.

“We were able to bring in a couple of real talented players over the last couple of years in Izak Rankine and Jordan Dawson – we thought Dawson was good and we thought he had leadership but to be our captain in our second year and All-Australian was a really terrific outcome. We didn’t want to trade for the sake of trading.

“We got Chris Burgess in as a bit of key position depth and we’ll be aggressive over the next 12 months and hopefully top up our list, but internally we do think we’ve got the makings of a terrific list.

“We’ve got some terrific young players. We’ve got some kids who are developing and we hope they can take the next step and hopefully hurdle us towards finals.”

Adelaide coach Matthew Nicks is out of contract at the end of the season, with Silvers confirming club and coach are in contract discussions.

“We’ve been part of this together with him as a footy club, he’s been there every step of the way of this rebuild, he’s built a terrific culture, he’s got a good team around him and the players have really bought in. He’s done a terrific job,” he said.

“The contract is on the agenda and we’re starting to have positive discussions around that, but there is no timeline.”

The Crows play West Coast in the AAMI Community Series on Saturday before opening their 2024 campaign against the Suns on the Gold Coast on March 16.
