Ablett Sr set to sell all of his legendary footy items and awards to the highest bidder

2024-03-04T17:58+11:00

Footy icon Gary Ablett Sr is set to sell off all of his individual awards to the highest bidder.

The 62-year-old won several important awards during his VFL/AFL career with Geelong and now you could get your hands on those medals and trophies.

Kane Cornes revealed the news on SEN Sportsday with Ablett Sr to sell his awards through Entertainment by Vin, a company that sells memorabilia as well as running sports entertainment shows featuring current and retired athletes, including Gary Ablett Jr.

A photo of Ablett Sr’s 1993 Leigh Matthews Trophy for AFL MVP was posted by the company’s Instagram account as a story on Monday, with the words ‘BUY THIS!’ alongside the image.

Ablett St also won three Coleman Medals across his career in 1993, 1994 and 1995 as well as a Norm Smith Medal in 1989.

Cornes says that Ablett Sr will sell off over 200 items in total.

“This has come across my desk today and it's a reasonable story that hasn't been reported yet,” Cornes said on SEN Sportsday.

“Gary Ablett Sr, his catalogue is being pieced together right now.

“So all of Gary Ablett Sr’s personal items are up for sale. We're talking the Leigh Matthews 1993 trophy, we’re talking the 1989 Norm Smith Medal, we’re talking the Coleman Medals, we’re talking boots, jumpers … 200 plus items of Gary Ablett Sr’s are up for sale.

“He is selling everything. Some items I'm assuming will be packaged up.

“There's posters, there’s signs, there's his Geelong guernsey, there's his boots.

“Anything Gary Ablett related, he has kept it all, there’s 200 plus items.

“It has been sold by an Instagram account by the name of Entertainment by Vin.

“The first item that is up for sale and is up now is the Leigh Matthews 1993 Trophy.”

Cornes hopes that someone purchases the majority of the items and puts them into a museum or hands them to the club so the public can see the awards and artefacts up close.

“I'm hoping there is a rich Geelong businessman who is down there that buys the really special items and it can go into a museum or it can go to the club,” Cornes said.

“That's my hope for it.”

Ablett Sr also won the Carji Greeves Medal for Geelong best and fairest in 1984, Mark of the Year in both 1985 and 1994, earned four All-Australian selections along with plenty of Geelong honours including Team of The Century and was named the club’s Greatest Ever Player.

He played 242 games for the Cats from 1984 to 1997 where he kicked 1021 goals, the sixth-most in VFL/AFL history.
