The emerging talent that the Dockers simply must pursue

2024-03-04T15:10+11:00

Fremantle has been urged to make a serious move for emerging Sydney forward Logan McDonald.

The Dockers must do everything in their power to lure the 21-year-old back to Western Australia, according to Kane Cornes.

After watching Freo lose to Port Adelaide in the AAMI Community Series on the weekend, Cornes believes McDonald, who is contracted with the Swans for 2024, should be a prime objective going forward.

He feels youngster Jye Amiss and pinch-hit ruckman Luke Jackson are not enough in terms of key forward targets for the future of Justin Longmuir’s side.

“They have to be all in to land Logan McDonald,” Cornes said on SEN Breakfast.

“Now, Logan McDonald is not perfect as a key forward, but it’s Jye Amiss or nothing (at the moment), which is saying something at Fremantle.

“They’re still searching for a forward since ‘Pav’ (Matthew Pavlich). Amiss didn’t play, Jackson didn’t play and they looked lost. They had no options forward of the ball.

“They’ve got first-round draft picks loaded to have a crack at him and they would know this. He’s a Perth boy, I just think they need a big target to help Amiss out in the forward line.

“So if it was Amiss, if it was Logan McDonald, and if it was Jackson (playing) a bit forward, how good does that combination look as opposed to what is currently there at Fremantle?

“It just may be a little bit tough if they suffer some injuries.”

McDonald kicked one goal from four disposals and one mark in the weekend’s loss to Brisbane.

The Bunbury product has played 44 games for the Swans since being drafted with Pick 4 in 2020. In that time he has kicked 56 goals including 32 across 20 games in 2023.

The Dockers will be hoping Amiss recovers from a corked quad and Jackson from concussion for their season opener against Brisbane at Optus Stadium on March 17.
