Saints defender suffers significant hamstring blow

2024-03-05T14:10+11:00

St Kilda defender Dougal Howard will miss at least the first month of the 2024 home and away season with scan results coming back on a hamstring concern.

It’s been revealed Howard has suffered a significant hamstring strain after leaving the field late in Sunday’s Community Series win over North Melbourne

The 27-year-old is entering his fourth season at RSEA Park after moving from Port Adelaide and has proved an important cog in Ross Lyon’s defence.

“Dougal has been dealt an unlucky blow, especially so close to the start of the season,” footy boss David Misson said in a statement.

“Despite the setback, we’re confident Dougal will approach his rehab diligently and will make himself available at the earliest opportunity."

Howard will miss games against at least Geelong, Collingwood, Essendon and Richmond, while the Saints face GWS and the Western Bulldogs the following fortnight.

Josh Battle is also in some doubt for Round 1 with a knee injury, while Mattaes Phillipou is listed as a test from a calf injury.

The Saints are still yet to make a call on Jack Sinclair (calf) and Marcus Windhager (hand) to face the Cats.

However, Paddy Dow has suffered a setback in his recovery from bone bruising in his knee and will spend longer than anticipated on the sidelines.
