How Hawks recruit Ginnivan has impressed Cornes since Magpies move

2024-03-07T06:53+11:00

Kane Cornes has liked what he’s seen from Jack Ginnivan so far in Hawthorn colours.

In his first official hit out for the club in the Community Series loss to the Western Bulldogs in Launceston, Ginnivan kicked two goals, had four score involvements and 12 disposals in an impressive performance.

While Ginnivan has always been a renowned goal kicker across his AFL journey with Collingwood, Cornes thinks that he’s been given some more freedom under Sam Mitchell as he pushes up the ground to find the footy.

Cornes also thinks that he could be able to have more of an impact around the ground as he works harder which gives him a license to leave the forward 50.

“You (Nathan Buckley) have been big on this, I remember you saying he's going to have to find a different string to his bow, Ginnivan,” Cornes said on SEN Breakfast.

“He kicked 41 (goals) in 2022. A lot of those were from free kicks and burrowing in and under, a lot of work inside forward 50.

“He's been allowed to play with some freedom by the looks at Hawthorn. I saw him in the second quarter, he got the ball in the back pocket, he kicked it inside and then he drifted down forward in the same piece of play.

“He was the one that bobbed up and kicked his second goal in the second quarter inside 50.

“He just seems to be working harder. If you can add that to his game and have a bit more of a license to get up the ground, I think he's going to be exciting to watch.”

Ginnivan will hope to make his Hawthorn debut when they face Essendon in the Round 1 clash at the MCG on Saturday, March 16.

He played 42 games and kicked 58 goals for the Magpies, winning the 2023 premiership with his first club.
