The 4 certainties for Sydney versus Melbourne

2024-03-07T13:35+11:00

Back for another year, the SEN.com.au team gives you an insight into how every game will play out across the weekend.

Labelling something a ‘certainty’ in any sport is fraught with danger.

But we’ll attempt to find some anyway.

Here is what we consider certainties for the season opening Thursday night clash between Sydney and Melbourne.

Errol Gulden 25+ disposals

The young wingman will hope to go to another level in 2024 after breaking out last campaign.

The last time he faced Melbourne, Gulden picked up 42 disposals to go with two goals at the SCG.

Given Melbourne will be somewhat inexperienced on the outside as well with the likes of Caleb Windsor playing, Gulden could have a fill-up.

He should cruise past 25 touches if he’s not tagged by the Demons.

Logan McDonald to kick 2 or more goals

Without Buddy, Logan McDonald is set to spearhead Sydney’s attack.

Paired by Hayden McLean and Joel Amartey, the Swans will look to go high when kicking the ball inside 50 and McDonald should at least have a few shots on goal.

While he’ll play on Steven May or Jake Lever, McDonald should make the most of at least two of his opportunities from full forward.

The Swans may need him to kick two or more if they’re to win this one as well.

Christian Petracca to enjoy 25+ disposals, 5+ clearances

Whether he plays forward or through the midfield on Thursday night, the Melbourne superstar will find plenty of it.

The 28-year-old is right in the thick of his prime and has publicly stated he’s got fitter off the back of a strong off-season.

The ultimate professional, Petracca knows how to rock up and dominate early in the season. He’s got a strong record against Sydney and has had 30 and 38 disposals in his last two games to start a home and away season.

Bayley Fritsch to kick multiple goals

Last time these two sides met Fritsch put five goals on Sydney’s defence.

A mercurial player at his best, the 27-year-old has kicked 14 goals in his last five games against Sydney.

He has the foils of Jacob van Rooyen and Josh Schache on Thursday night and often finds himself in strong form to start the season.

Across his first home and away games of the past three seasons, Fritsch has kicked a combined seven goals.
