Abbey Holmes outlines how she received All-Australian committee position

2024-03-10T13:55+11:00

Former AFLW premiership player Abbey Holmes has outlined how she came to be on the 2024 All-Australian selection committee.

SEN’s Sam Edmund broke the news on Tuesday that Holmes would replace Geelong’s former premiership captain Cameron Ling on the committee after he stepped down from the position after 11 years.

Holmes expressed her excitement with starting the role and was particularly honoured upon receiving the news from fellow committee member Laura Kane.

Holmes emphasised that: “I didn’t need the time (to think about it)… absolutely I’d love to be involved.”

“An incredible honour and a privilege to be considered to be a selector,” she told SEN SA's The Run Home.

“I can’t wait to get stuck in.”

Holmes further noted her eagerness to provide a new perspective to the selection of the team, looking to reward efforts which she thinks often go unrecognised on the stat sheet.

“As players, there’s so many positions that go unrewarded… so many quality wingmen that don’t get accolades or the stats on the sheet,” Holmes said.

“I’m going to be swung by somebody that I see.”

The 2024 AFL season kicks off on Thursday with Sydney playing Melbourne at the SCG, with Abbey Holmes continuing her role on Channel 7 broadcast team.
