Hall and Watling spruik $26 Golden Slipper smokey

2024-03-13T10:25+11:00

Gareth Hall and Dean Watling haven given a push for Gatsby’s in the Golden Slipper.

The Chris Waller-trained colt will target the $5 million feature on March 23 after an impressive debut win in the Ranvet Handicap three weeks ago.

Gatsby’s will next race at Randwick on Saturday in the Pago Pago Stakes where he’ll need to win to take his place in the Slipper a week later.

But with many expecting him to take care of business this weekend, Hall says the $26 that is on offer in the Slipper right now will not be the case should he win well in the Pago Pago.

“Guy Mulcaster threw a spanner in the works with the Slipper,” Hall told SENTrack.

“He said he tried to tell me to back Gatsby’s in the Slipper from Chris Waller and being a son of Snitzel.

“He races this weekend in the Pago Pago and is a $2.30 favourite, you’re still getting $26 for Gatsby’s and I’d definitely take that, that is a bet.

“He’ll be half the price if he wins on Saturday.”

Watling, a leading form analyst and New South Wales racing expert, was impressed with Gatsby's debut win and believes punters should take the $26 on offer right now.

"I'd take the $26," Watling added.

"If he wins the Pago Pago in really good fashion he'll be even shorter, I think the main aim for him is the Sires or the JJ Atkins.

"He looks a really nice horse."

Storm Boy is the current $2.30 favourite with Sportsbet for the Golden Slipper, while Gatsby's represents great value at $26.
