Report: Postecoglou set for Melbourne homecoming with Spurs to face Newcastle

2024-03-18T10:00+11:00

Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly coming to Melbourne to play a friendly against Newcastle United in May.

The Times reports Newcastle was booked in after being knocked out of the FA Cup quarterfinals, meaning they’d be available to play on May 22, three days after the Premier League season concludes.

Postecoglou, who first commenced his coaching journey with South Melbourne FC, has enjoyed a strong start to his time in charge of Spurs.

Postecoglou and Tottenham played last year in Perth against West Ham United in what was his first game at the helm, packing out Optus Stadium with a crowd of 46,000.

Tottenham and Newcastle will play at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on a Wednesday before the ground is given back to the AFL for the beginning of Round 11 on Thursday night.

The talent both sides will bring is unclear given the short turnaround from the Premier League season.

Tottenham’s clash could be played as a double header, with Arsenal reportedly set to bring their women’s side out to face an A-League Women’s All Stars team.

As first reported by The Age, that match is also tipped to be played in May.

Matildas Steph Catley, Caitlin Foord and Kyra Cooney-Cross have all featured for Arsenal this season and would prove major drawcards at the MCG after the Matildas’ popular World Cup campaign last year.
