“I would go”: Jeremy Cameron on Tasmania’s prospects of luring players to 19th AFL side

2024-03-18T13:03+11:00

Geelong forward Jeremy Cameron would happily play for the Tasmania AFL side … if the Cats told the forward they no longer wanted him.

Details of the Tasmanian team are set to be released on Monday night with the club’s name, guernsey and more to be revealed.

While some have doubts over the viability of the team in Australia’s southernmost state, particularly in terms of luring players across in trade and free agency, Cameron thinks that a Tassie lifestyle would suit players like him who are from the country and into their farming.

Cameron spoke about the Tasmania team on his YouTube Channel where he answered several viewer questions including: “What’s your thoughts on Tassie’s AFL team, if set up earlier would you have liked a farm life there too?”

With the Tassie side likely set to be introduced in 2028, Cameron says that he’d happily play for them if the Cats went to him later in his career and told him his services were no longer required at GMHBA Stadium.

“It’s a fantastic thing for Tassie, they love their footy,” Cameron said.

“Everyone will jump on board and away they go.

“Would I move down there personally? Well, if Geelong came to me and said, ‘Look mate, you’re getting too old, you’re 39, you can’t play with us anymore’ and if Tassie wanted me, I would go.

“It’s also a great state. For me personally, there’s so much farmland, there’s fishing, it would suit me, wouldn’t it?

“You could have a farm down there no issues at all and play a bit of football.

“The only thing is, I’d make sure they’d put in my contract that I’m allowed to live in my caravan full time with my family.”

Cameron will be 34 and one month away from turning 35 when the Tassie team likely plays its first game in Round 1, 2028.

The superstar forward is currently contracted at Geelong until the end of the 2025 season.
