"Like he was having an out of body experience”: Sattler weighs in on Mitchell’s post-match comments

Former Penrith Panthers great Scott Sattler has criticised Latrell Mitchell’s apathy towards his swearing in a post-match interview.

Mitchell was interviewed after the South Sydney Rabbitohs lost to the Brisbane Broncos on Thursday night, in a game where he scored his 100th NRL career try.

Mitchell proceeded to swear five times in the 30-second interview, leading to criticisms from many NRL pundits, including Sattler.

“It was like he was having an out of body experience,” said Sattler on SENQ's Breakfast with Pat and Heals, “it was like he didn’t realise he was on air”.

“Sometimes I don’t think he really cares what he says… it was the one thing that disappointed me the most.”

Sattler was quick to voice his love for Mitchell’s presence and role in the game, admitting the apathy towards the swearing was what made it so disheartening.

“I love how authentic he is, I love how he likes to speak his mind. I love how independent he is but he’s an experienced player and he knows the effect something like this can have on the game as a whole,” said Sattler.

“I’m willing to give him half a leave pass if he goes, ‘I’m so sorry’… but to say I don’t care about the language… you’ve got to be a little bit more eloquent and articulate and aware of your surroundings.”

The NRL and the Rabbitohs are unlikely to sanction Mitchell for his expletive-laden interview; a fact Sattler thought was a missed opportunity.

“To hear the NRL and the club aren’t really gonna sanction him… whether it be a fine to a charity… I just think some message has to be sent in some way,” he said.

Mitchell and the Rabbitohs take on arch-rivals the Sydney Roosters this Friday night, as they continue to look for their first win of the season.
