Who they missed: The five players who were overlooked by the coaches in Round 1

2024-03-20T07:05+11:00

Which players should have been given coaches votes for their Round 1 performances?

Champion Data’s Daniel Hoyne has named the five players who were perhaps overlooked by the coaches on the weekend.

The below guys rated in the top five of Champion Data’s ratings yet did not receive any votes (aside from James Worpel who was given just one).

See the five players below:

Stephen Coniglio (GWS)

“He did not get a vote from the coaches, but was our second highest rated player on the ground,” said Hoyne on SEN’s Sportsday.

“He had the third most impact of any player with ball in hand over the weekend.

“He’s in great nick at the moment, along with a lot of his teammates.”

Max King (St Kilda)

“I reckon if Max King plays like that every weekend he’s a chance to kick 65-70 goals.

“His inaccuracy in front of goal hurt him, and our ratings really punish inaccuracy, but despite that we still had him as the fifth best player on the ground. He did not get a vote.

“He had 17 disposals which we very rarely see from him and he had 550 metres gained. He’s never had anywhere near that before. So he’s playing a slightly different role with huge impact.

“I think he’s in for a huge year.”

Jack Viney (Melbourne)

“He’s started the year well. I thought he was one of the only shining lights against the Swans (in Opening Round).

“He was again the fifth highest rated player on the ground and didn’t get a vote.

“I thought his goal coming out of the centre bounce when the Dogs looked hot was enormous.

“He’s kicked huge goals in two weeks, his ball use has gone through the roof.

“Number one pressure player at the Dees.”

Dan Houston (Port Adelaide)

“I’ll keep talking about this guy until the cows come home.

“Again unbelievable. You’ve got to put time into him, if you’re playing Port Adelaide you cannot let this guy go.

“I think he’s the most balanced half-back flanker in the competition in terms of his ability to be able to intercept and then his creativity with ball in hand.”

James Worpel (Hawthorn)

“He was the fifth highest rated player for the round and second highest rated player on the ground.

“He only just squeezed in for one vote, so one of the coaches didn’t rate him as one of the top five players on the ground.

“That was his best performance over his career. 19 contested possessions, 10 clearances, kicked a goal and was involved in nine of their scores.

“A complete performance to start the season.”
