“We're not here to make up the numbers”: Stewart adamant Geelong can compete for premiership glory
Geelong vice-captain Tom Stewart firmly believes that the current Geelong core is capable of premiership glory in the coming years.
Following the Cats’ 2023 campaign which saw them finish an underwhelming 12th on the table, Stewart remains adamant that the mix of experience and youth within the playing group holds the keys to achieving Grand Final success sooner rather than later.
Geelong won the premiership only two seasons ago in 2022, with Stewart confident that the club will be to produce similar highs.

“I’ve had some great individual success along the journey, but nothing comes close to winning a premiership,” he told SEN’s Breakfast team.
“I do see a flag in this group… I still think our best is as good as anyone’s.
“A lot of things have to go right for us in order to win but I’m super confident in the preparation we’ve had over this pre-season in particular,” he added.
“Six of the seven that started in the back half (against St Kilda) were premiership defenders, and that was something that we were really conscious of.
“I think the balance that we strike with the experience that we have and the talented youth coming through is something that’s really exciting for this footy club.
“We’re not here to make up the numbers, we’re here to win every game and play in the finals.”
Stewart will line up for his 150th game this weekend, with the five time All-Australian and two-time club best and fairest determined to contribute toward their successes going forward.
On the back of their eight-point win over the Saints last weekend, Geelong face a hungry Adelaide outfit at the Adelaide Oval in Round 2.
The Crows will be looking to bounce back after their excruciating six-point loss to Gold Cost in their Round 1 matchup.
