Henry hamstring concern far worse than first thought, King offered ban for late bump

UPDATE

St Kilda has been dealt another blow from its defining win over Collingwood, with Liam Henry to spend over a month on the sidelines.

Henry came off late in the 15-point win over Collingwood and was only thought to have suffered a cramp. But the Saints are now reeling in the news Henry will miss 6-8 weeks with a significant hamstring strain.

Footy boss David Misson confirmed the blow.

“This is obviously a terrible blow for Liam, who has impressed in his first two games at the club,” Misson said, via a club statement.

“Liam’s setback is far greater than we initially thought, especially given he has never had an injury of this type before.

“At this stage, Liam’s return-to-play timeline sits at approximately six to eight weeks.

“The shorter turnaround between games early in the season has presented its challenges, however we have full confidence that Liam will attack his rehab with the same intensity he does on game day to make himself available as soon as possible.”

In just his second game for the club on Thursday night after seeking a move from Fremantle in the trade period, Henry was at his dynamic best.

He finished with 14 touches and two goals in a win that stamped the Saints’ credentials in 2024.

His scan results come after Max King was offered a one-match ban for rough conduct, while the Saints also confirmed a significant collarbone injury for Mason Wood.

EARLIER

Max King has been offered a one-match ban for a rough conduct charge in Thursday night’s win over Collingwood.

The incident occurred in the final quarter of the 15-point win, with King collecting young Magpie Finlay Macrae with a high bump.

Macrae was awarded a free kick for high contact at the time. Match Review Officer Michael Christian graced the incident as high contact, medium impact and careless conduct.

King played a big role in the emphatic win, kicking three goals from 15 touches in the clash to be in his side’s best.

The Saints play Essendon in Round 3.

Meanwhile, St Kilda has also confirmed Mason Wood will be sent for surgery on a broken collarbone sustained in a gruesome incident against Collingwood.

“Obviously you’d prefer your players not get injured at all, but considering the angle and way Mason landed, we could’ve been dealing with something far more serious,” Saints footy boss David Misson said in a statement.

“Mason’s set for surgery in the next few hours, which is a great start. He’ll now get his rehab started pretty much straight away.

“We’ll have a better idea of a return to play timeline after his initial recovery from surgery - we think it’ll be around the six-week mark, but we’ll be able to provide a clearer picture early next week.

“If we know anything about Mase it’s that he’s extremely diligent and professional in how he looks after his body, so we know he’ll be doing everything he can to get right and be back on the field as soon as possible.”
