The recovery secrets behind Collingwood marathon man’s 217-game streak

2024-03-27T16:00+11:00

Jack Crisp has played 82 more consecutive games than the AFL’s next current best.

Collingwood midfielder Jack Crisp plays his 218th consecutive AFL game on Thursday against his former club Brisbane at the Gabba.

Crisp sits third in the all-time ranks of games played in a row, only behind Jim Stynes (244) and Adem Yze (226) and he’s showing no signs of slowing down as he’s still just 30 years of age.

The next best in the AFL is Christian Petracca on 135 consecutive games and the Magpie thinks that his streak is mainly thanks to his meticulous off-field preparation.

Crisp explained all of the steps he takes each week to get his body right and continually get himself up to perform on game day.

“I get this question a fair bit,” Crisp told SENQ Mornings.

“I put a lot of time into my body in terms of maintenance and looking after it with lots of massage and physio sessions.

“(With cryotherapy), I did that for probably three to four years once a week, which was good with the infrared sauna.

“Last year I've kind of switched with the ice bath and infra-red sauna instead for a different combo.

“But in saying that, saying that I go see a myotherapist as well once a week.”

As well as utilising almost every recovery tool at his possession, Crisp says that the finishing touches for him are his sleep and the genetics that he’s clearly been blessed with.

“Then my wife's always pretty good at letting me sleep the night before main training and the night before games, even with three kids, so I commend her for that because I know that's tough,” Crisp said.

“Mum and Dad gave me some good genes I think too.”

If Crisp keeps his streak up, he’ll pass Yze for second all-time in consecutive games played when Collingwood plays Melbourne on King’s Birthday.
