Adams impresses in first official Swans hitout as Tigers and Zebras pick up VFL wins

2024-03-31T16:48+11:00

Two games of VFL footy took place on Sunday to wrap up Round 2 of the 2024 season.

The first match of the day was held at Punt Road Oval as a curtain-raiser to Sunday’s AFL clash at the MCG with Richmond getting the better of Sydney 84 to 72.

The Swans got off to a hot start, leading by 19 points at quarter time before Richmond kicked five goals to zero in the second term to retake the lead, one they’d never give back.

The game had plenty of AFL eyeballs on it as it was Taylor Adams’ first official hit out for the Swans and despite playing on managed minutes, the former Magpie had a big impact early with 18 disposals, 11 tackles and three clearances.

He was supported well by Caiden Cleary who had 24 disposals on ball, while Aaron Francis (15 disposals) and Sam Reid (five disposals) were quiet in defeat.

For the victors Richmond, Sam Naismith was huge up against Lachlan McAndrew, helping himself to two goals, 19 disposals, eight marks and 18 hitouts.

He was supported in the ruck by Samson Ryan who also kicked three goals, while Kane McAuliffe (26 disposals) and Jacob Koschitzke (seven marks) showed some nice signs.

The day’s second game took place at Trevor Barker Oval with Sandringham beating Essendon 115-77 after the Saints and the Bombers met at the senior level on Saturday.

The Zebras got off to a flyer at home, kicking six goals to two in the first term before the Bombers fought back to take a one-point half-time lead. A big third term for the home side ensured they’d take the four points comfortably.

For the Zebras, plenty of eyes were on Jack Hayes in return from a foot injury and the forward finished with two goals to go with 12 disposals in just three-quarters of footy as he pushes for a senior return.

Other St Kilda-listed names to impress included Lance Collard (four goals) and Olli Hotton (one goal, 17 disposals) as the youngsters look to impress Ross Lyon.

For the Bombers, they’d be happy with the return of Elijah Tsatas (24 disposals) after he came back from senior footy while Archie Roberts (22 disposals) and Lewis Hayes (24 disposals) were solid. Vigo Visentini also finished with two majors.

The other winners in Round 2 were Brisbane over Collingwood, North Melbourne over Carlton, Williamstown over Coburg, Frankston over Port Melbourne, Box Hill over Geelong, Werribee over Southport and Footscray over Casey.
