“You make it so hard”: Buckley's funny insight into watching Ginnivan face Collingwood

2024-04-08T08:25+10:00

Nathan Buckley has provided some insight into his viewing of Collingwood versus Hawthorn on Sunday afternoon, a match that centred storyline wise around Jack Ginnivan’s first clash against the Magpies.

The Collingwood champion has come out strongly against booing at footy games in the past and says he tried to urge the faithful to cheer the ex-Pie instead.

Unfortunately, Ginnivan, naturally, drew some high contact early in the game and antagonised his former teammates, and Buckley laughed that even he considered some jeering.

“I was asked to speak to the Collingwood faithful, board member Paul Licuria couldn't get across to Gather Round, before they walked across the bridge to Adelaide Oval yesterday afternoon,” Buckley told SEN Breakfast.

“I said, 'why don’t we surprise everyone and when Ginnivan gets the ball we cheer for him rather than booing him', let’s turn the tables. You know I’m not a fan of booing.

“So I go across and I’m watching the game and sure as anything he gets the head-high free kick in the first 10 minutes – which was there, but it was always going to happen.

“And he actually tried to work through the tackle. His arm didn’t go up, he didn’t duck.

“But then he does some celebration after and I thought, you make it so hard. You make it so easy to boo,” Bucks laughed.

“If I was someone who booed, I reckon I would have booed in that moment! I get (all the theatre around it), but the carry on…

“Then I read the Glenn McFarlane article (in the Herald Sun) and Ginnivan’s saying he’s trying to change and you get the human element of it under the headline and I’ve got more empathy.

“Dig a bit deeper, go under the headline and you’ll have more empathy for the situation.”

Ginnivan kicked two goals from 11 disposals in the narrow loss to the reigning premiers.
