Blues set to be active in upcoming mid-season AFL draft

2024-04-10T09:03+10:00

Carlton Head of Football Brad Lloyd has confirmed that his club will be active in the upcoming mid-season draft.

The Blues have two list spots available to utilise, given the season-ending injuries suffered by Sam Docherty and Jack Silvagni.

While they have constructed a deep list, they would benefit from targeting a replacement for Silvagni on their list, while their mid-forward stocks have also been hit hard so far this season.

Carlton is currently without Jesse Motlop (hamstring), Jack Martin (hamstring), David Cuningham (calf) and Lachie Fogarty (wrist), to go with Silvagni (knee) and Docherty (knee), while Elijah Hollands (adductor) was subbed out last weekend.

Lloyd said list manager Nick Austin and his team will be getting to work and keeping a close eye on the state leagues.

“We’re going to have a bit of a look. We’ve got a couple of spots there,” Lloyd told SEN’s Sportsday.

“Just from a recruiting point of view, we’ll let these early games evolve across the state leagues.

“We’d like to use a pick in there. We haven’t locked into anyone yet, but the recruiting team has their head down working through that.

“I really like these mechanisms to improve your list, so if the right player is there, we’ll use a spot and bring someone in.

“It’s good having these mechanisms so when you get a nasty injury along the way, you can add for the short term and give some opportunities.”

Carlton is hoping to get Sam Walsh back into their side for this week’s clash with Adelaide.

If the star midfielder gets through training this week, he is expected to be named for the Saturday twilight clash.
