Why rugby union is failing to stand up to an NRL juggernaut

2024-04-10T10:00+12:00

Does rugby union, at the Super Rugby level in particular, have to stretch its week out? Or are they confident enough that they're not getting enveloped by an NRL juggernaut?

The TV numbers would be interesting, but how is the viewing audience comparing for the two? And, can we trust the numbers anyway? Who in their right mind is going to announce publicly diminishing support, not even Trump or Biden spout that stuff.

Is there scope for Thursday night rugby, or how about a game on Sundays to increase the options? What's standing in its way, surely not the broadcasters! Although in this country, Sky Sport will be surely lapping up rugby league's success as well.

The NRL is killing it on their behalf and they'll have paid a lot less than they do for the coverage of rugby union. So, is rugby league bailing them out?

The magazine shows for the NRL are plentiful, entertaining, informative and opinionated. They're all over rugby's equivalent - just watch them as a neutral and compare.

They're not scared to stand on toes, they don't stand on ceremony either. League gives you edge, rugby union is a nice, safe, solid meat in the sandwich.

Personality is popular too, and not a bad asset for television presenters or pundits. It seems at times everyone around rugby union is walking on eggshells, dodging any possible boat-rocking of the players, the spokespeople, or the administration.

I wonder how many pundits walk away from a game or show thinking, "God, I wish I had said that instead of holding back."

No one's really talking about officiating at the moment and hallelujah for that - plaudits to the whistle blowers, of course.

Rugby union officials will refute this rant and be very forthright in their support for their processes. Except we all know they're not, because we're all awaiting news of a coming together of the parties, a new 'fit for purpose' government, and rugby to be better catered for from go to whoa.

But clearly, that is dragging a chain that is getting heavier by the day.
