The son of a former Saint who is emerging as a draft prospect to watch in 2024

Elwood Peckett is emerging as a quality father-son prospect after a strong start to the Coates Talent League season with the Dandenong Stingrays.

The son of former St Kilda stalwart Justin, who played 252 games for the Saints, Elwood starred for the Stingrays in their Round 3 win over the GWV Rebels last weekend.

The junior Peckett, a product of Bonbeach, is putting himself right in the mix for the 2024 draft with some impressive early-season performances.

Bravo Talent Management’s James Pitcher has been taken by what the 187cm half-forward/midfielder has been able to produce so far in 2024.

“Justin Peckett’s boy, Elwood Peckett, is a father-son prospect,” Pitcher said on SEN’s Future Stars.

“He’s one that has really got going this year. He had 25 touches on the weekend playing forward/mid. He’s a father-son to watch.

“We’ll see him more at this stage as a high half-forward. He played a bit of midfield on the weekend.

“The week before against Gippsland Power he did something where in a couple of strides he swooped, picked up the ball, turned on a 50c piece, and banged it home from about 50.

“So he’s got those athletic traits. He probably needs to work on his tank, by the looks of things, but he’s got some power and in the modern game that’s what you need. You need that power to break out of the stoppage.

“If he were to be drafted tomorrow, he’d be starting as a high half-forward.”

Peckett finished with 25 touches, six marks, six inside 50s and four tackles in Dandenong’s 35-point victory over the Rebels last week.

Across three Coates Talent League games in 2024, he is averaging 18.7 disposals, 5.3 marks and 3.7 inside 50s.
