Report: McLachlan flags interest in first job since AFL tenure

2024-04-12T17:20+10:00

Former AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan has formally signalled his intentions to join Racing Victoria, and potentially become the body’s chairman.

The Herald Sun reports McLachlan applied to be a director of RV this week after months of speculation linking him to the chairmanship.

Should he be approved as a director, McLachlan would then face a vote to become the chairman of RV. He also needs the support of Racing Minister Anthony Carbines, who reports earlier in the year suggested was in preference of McLachlan taking the top job at RV.

RV has not had a chairman since Brian Kruger stepped down in June last year. Mike Hirst has been the acting chairman in the interim.

McLachlan had previously indicated he would not make any decision on his future until February this year. He is a lifelong racing fan and has even had shares in a previous Melbourne Cup runner.

Formerly in charge of the AFL from 2014-2023, McLachlan was also previously linked to the top job of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games after his time in charge of Australia's biggest sporting codes.
