Multiple AFL teams believe key Sun could be gettable in upcoming trade period

SEN Chief Reporter Sam Edmund has put Jack Lukosius on the agenda as someone to watch in the upcoming trade period.

Edmund reports that many teams around the league believe he could be prised out of the Suns, given his constantly shifting role.

“Just a watch on Jack Lukosius. There’s a long way to go until the trade period and he’s contracted until the end of 2026, a four-year commitment he signed in the middle of 2022,” Edmund told SEN Breakfast.

“Since then, he’s been moved from defence to the forward line, stints on the wing and this season a return to the backline.

“It’s obviously a new coach with a new philosophy at the helm.

“So, a few clubs I’ve spoken to over the last few days didn’t hesitate in saying he was gettable and said there might be an opportunity if the planets align.

“Damien Hardwick is not going to die wondering. There’s a long way to go.

“I’m not sure Jack is happy with playing in the backline, because he sees himself as a forward alongside Ben King and Jed Walter, but Ethan Read has come in as well and Damien Hardwick sees him as a defender.”

Garry Lyon wonders whether new coach Hardwick simply doesn’t see Lukosius as a forward, in the same way Stuart Dew did.

“We read into it that he was a forward that kicked 39 goals last year, Damien Hardwick had a look at it and say ‘you’re not a forward in my group’, so you can go back and if you can’t make a fist of going back, you’ll go out,” he said.

Gold Coast has incredible depth when it comes to key forwards, with Ben King, Jed Walter, Ethan Read, Levi Casboult, Sam Day and Lukosius.

They traded Mabior Chol last season likely because of that depth.
