Cameron Smith blasts calls to change golden point rules

2024-04-16T11:10+10:00

SEN’s Cameron Smith believes the NRL should not bow to public pressure, urging the competition to leave the golden point rules as they are.

Round 6 in the NRL featured two golden point thrillers which saw the Warriors and Manly split the points whilst the Raiders snatched a last second field goal to sink the Titans’ hearts.

Pundits and commentators alike, including SEN’s Jimmy Smith, have demanded the NRL change the overtime rules to golden try and eliminate the draw entirely. Smith said there was no compelling need for change.

“You can’t keep running the players around. That’s why there’s a full time,” Smith said on SENQ.

“You can’t just keep going because you’ve got to play the next week.

“If you can’t separate two teams after 90 minutes of football, then they deserve one point each.

“The constant tinkering of our game is making the game at times hard to watch. “You have just got to stay clear of it.

“There is now talk of getting rid of the kick off.

“Please, you can’t do that.”

Golden point was introduced at the start of the 2003 season and as of Round 6 2024, there have been 157 matches to go to golden point. There have been 18 draws in this time.
