Who they missed: The five players who were overlooked by the coaches in Round 5

2024-04-17T07:20+10:00

Which players should have been given coaches votes for their Round 5 performances?

Champion Data’s Daniel Hoyne has named the five players who were perhaps overlooked by the coaches on the weekend.

The below guys rated in the top five of Champion Data’s ratings yet did not receive any votes (aside from Harry Sheezel who got two but could have got more).

See the five players below:

Lachie Neale (Brisbane)

“He didn’t get a vote but was the third highest rated player on the ground,” Hoyne said on SEN’s Sportsday.

“He had 25 disposals, which isn’t through the roof for him, but his ability to be able to impact the game at clearance and contest which leads to a score was significant for Brisbane.”

Josh Kelly (GWS)

“We had him as the fourth highest rated player on the ground.

“I can understand why as he only had 21 disposals, but again, the hardest part of the game to assess live (without going back on replay) is ball use.

“He had the seventh most impact with ball in hand of any player for the weekend.”

Sam Clohesy (Gold Coast)

“Just wanted to give him a bit of love.

“Since our ratings system has been in place since 2010, there’s been 1324 debutants - he’s had the eighth best start of any player.

“He’s absolutely flying playing that wing role, he’s having impact on the scoreboard.”

Andrew Brayshaw (Fremantle)

“Only the 18 disposals, but again it was the damage that they did in a really tight, contested game.

“He had 14 contested possessions and six score involvements.”

Harry Sheezel (North Melbourne)

“His impact was the second best in that game (but he got just two votes).

“He is the 11th best player in the competition at the moment.

“I think it’s time to move him up the ground, into the midfield, get him forward of centre and impacting the game.

“He is wasted across half-back at the moment.”
