Black Sticks great Olivia Merry retires from international hockey

2024-04-18T11:00+12:00

Almost twelve years on from making her debut for New Zealand in 2012 against India, co-captain Olivia Merry has announced her retirement from international hockey.

At 32, Merry has the second-most caps for the Black Sticks women's side with 284, and finishes as their greatest goal scorer of all-time with 128. That tally is good enough to be fifth on the all-time scoring list for international women's hockey.

In that 2012 debut, Merry scored two goals in a 7-2 win in Napier, cemented her credentials as an attacking presence early.

The Christchurch native has represented New Zealand at two Olympics games (Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020), but one of her greatest achievements was being part of the 2018 Commonwealth Games side, scoring in a 4-1 win against Australia to leave the Gold Coast with a gold medal.

A journey of dedication, passion and perseverance is how Merry could best characterise her career upon reflection.

“From the early days of training with some of my idols, to competing at the Olympic and Commonwealth Games, I've poured my heart and soul into the black shirt. As with any journey there are always challenges and setbacks, but also amazing wins and highs, which I believe has moulded me into the person I am today," Merry said.

“I'm grateful for the support of my coaches, teammates, family, and fans who have been with me in this journey. A particular thank you to my personal sponsors who have supported me throughout my entire career.”

Merry also co-captained the Black Sticks alongside Megan Hull at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and 2022 World Cup, there New Zealand equaled their best-ever World Cup finish by placing fifth.

“She is the epitome of what it means to be a Black Stick, and anyone who has had the privilege of playing with her, against her, or meeting her is better for it. She has given everything to the shirt and inspired us all to be better everyday" Hull said.

“All sports need great players and humans like Olivia and it’s been such an honour to share the turf with an absolute legend of our game. I know her family and friends could not be prouder and on behalf of the team I wish her all the very best for the exciting chapter that lies ahead.”

Merry exits the international game at a time when New Zealand hockey failed to qualify for the women's Olympic tournament for the first time in 28 years.
