Why Geelong is in the “best position” right now to win the flag

2024-04-23T08:50+10:00

Kane Cornes believes Geelong is perfectly placed to have yet another tilt at a premiership in 2024.

The Cats have started the season in fine fashion, winning all six games to sit on top of the AFL ladder as the only remaining undefeated side.

After Chris Scott masterminded a 26-point victory over Brisbane at the Gabba in Round 6, Cornes has the Cats as the team in the best position to win the flag at this early stage.

He points to the fact they still have seven matches at GMHBA Stadium as a key factor, plus the presence of Scott, who he describes is comfortably the best coach in the competition, and an abundance of attacking options.

“They’ve just knocked off the Lions in Brisbane, where they didn’t lose last year, in tough conditions,” Cornes said on SEN Breakfast.

“They (the Lions) made a mockery of Melbourne on the MCG and the Cats have gone to Brisbane - a team that played in the Grand Final last year - on their home deck and knocked them off convincingly.

“There is no ‘but’ with Geelong. They’ve got seven games left at home, they’ve got a squad mentality.

“They’ve got the best coach in the league. He’s 20 per cent better than the next coach.

“Their front six is better than anyone else’s. Yes, the midfield has some questions.

“But they are in the best position right now to win another premiership versus any other team.”

Geelong has beaten St Kilda (8 points), Adelaide (19 points), Hawthorn (36 points), Western Bulldogs (4 points), North Melbourne (75 points) and the Lions (26 points) so far in 2024.

The Cats have the fifth best attack after six games, scoring 575 at an average of 95.8, while conceding the least amount of points in the league (407 at an average of 67.8).

They next meet Carlton in a genuine top four clash at the MCG on Saturday.
