Coleman Medallist names his seven most underrated players in the AFL

2024-04-23T13:50+10:00

Coleman Medallist Scott Cummings and fellow SEN WA host Tim Gossage have named their seven most underrated players in the AFL.

The duo tried to shine a light on those that they think don’t get enough attention for what they offer their teams on a weekly basis.

Gossage explained the criteria for naming players in their underrated groups.

“These players might not be underrated within their clubs but aren’t given a lot of credit from fans and the media,” Gossage said on SEN WA Breakfast.

“They get accolades and adulation but are often a rung below the superstars in their respective teams.

“They don’t get enough attention for what they deliver.”

Check out their top sevens below ordered from 1 to 7.

Cummings’ top seven

1 - Brody Mihocek (Collingwood)

“My number one is Brody Mihocek, he's just a deadset warrior week in, week out,” Cummings said on SEN WA Breakfast.

“He's not a massive man, but he takes on the biggest … he just gets it done week in, week out.

“Mihocek for me is the most underrated player going around.

“He's possibly Collingwood's only key forward.”

2 - Kamdyn McIntosh (Richmond)

“I've got Kamdyn McIntosh from Richmond.

“He has been playing for a long, long time, he’s a two-time premiership player and just always gets it done on the wing.

“He's one of those players that you can just rely on week in, week out.”

3 - Ollie Henry (Geelong)

“I've got him in there for sure.

“I was surprised he didn't get more of a run at Collingwood and they wouldn't mind him right now.”

4 - Kyle Langford (Essendon)

“It’s another forward and he’s probably rated highly within the Essendon group.

“But when you're talking key forwards and players who just deliver week in week out, Kyle Langford is never in that conversation, and I think he should be.”

5 - Luke Ryan (Fremantle)

“I think Luke Ryan doesn't get the attention he deserves.

“We talk collectively about the back six at Fremantle, but Luke Ryan is having a stellar season.”

6 - Jack Buckley (GWS)

“Number six for me is Jack Buckley.

“We all talk Sam Taylor. But Jack Buckley in the defensive end, I think he is completely underrated.

“He is rarely beaten and doesn't let many goals through.”

7 - Rowan Marshall (St Kilda)

“Number seven for me is Rowan Marshall. He is one of the best ruckmen in the competition.

“But when you talk ruckmen, we've been talking Luke Jackson, we talk Max Gawn, we talk Tim English, Brodie Grundy has been thrown into the conversation.

“But no one ever mentions Rowan Marshall for mine.”

Gossage’s top seven

1 - Brent Daniels (GWS)

“I think this kid, if he can stay injury free, could be in Toby Greene areas for the GWS Giants. I talk of Brent Daniels,” Gossage said.

“He plays tall for a very small man. He is tough, he goes hard at it and let me say that if he stays fit, and he does have some problems, but if he stays fit, I really do think he could go to the next level.

“But right now when you talk of GWS, he's certainly not the one in discussion as being a star of their lineup.

“I do think he is very much under the radar.”

2 - Alex Neal-Bullen (Melbourne)

“I have Alex Neal-Bullen. He has really stepped it up in 2024.

“He's a key part of what Melbourne's success will be built around this season.

“A lot of the work he does around the contest doesn't go unnoticed by Melbourne, but I think from an outsider looking in, we probably miss Neal-Bullen.”

3 - James Jordon (Sydney)

“Mine is James Jordon, Sydney went after him, he was on the outer at Melbourne and couldn't get a game.

“I think he is a very important player as a running midfielder for Sydney, a bit of an outside mid as well.

“I think James Jordon is a key and I think he's really fitted in nicely there at the Sydney Swans.”

4 - Ollie Henry (Geelong)

“You describe this bloke as the third banana in the forward line of Geelong.

“He's an inside 50 marking beast, he kicks goals for fun, I love him.

“I love his pressure when he's not there marking … he’s doing a lot of grunt work as well.

“Oliver Henry for me.”

5 - Nick Holman (Gold Coast)

6 - Jack Bowes (Geelong)

“Jack Bowes for me.

“Just the three games this year so far. This is the bloke that came down on a massive contract from Gold Coast.

“He’s a bit of a clearance bull, he likes to play inside, he tackles hard.

“Albeit he's only played three of the five games Geelong have played this year, I think we might see some upside there.”

7 - James Aish (Fremantle)

“We talk of the springboard defenders that Fremantle have got with Luke Ryan and Jordan Clark, but he (Aish) is the third best rebounding defender.

“He does get forward he bombs the ball inside 50 as well. James Aish is very important.

“He's the link between back and forward for me.”
