How a tied series sparked an expanded Women’s Origin series in 2024

2024-04-30T11:44+10:00

After years of campaigning, the NRLW players and fans finally have their wish in 2024, with the State of Origin Series expanded to a full three-game series.

The move comes after the series was given a second game last year, but with both sides taking one win, Queensland was awarded the trophy due to a better point differential.

2024 will give both sides the first chance to become the undisputed holders of the prestigious shield throughout a three-game series and finally an alignment with the Men’s series.

After last year’s series ended in a draw, Queensland Maroons captain Ali Briggenshaw admitted it may have been a blessing in disguise to allow Women’s Origin to finally expand.

“Last year was a perfect example of what we need and now what is now able to happen with the three games,” Briggenshaw told SENQ Breakfast.

“I think if it didn’t end how it did last year we wouldn’t have got three games. “So, I feel like everything happens for a reason.”

An extra game does throw a spanner into the works for the squad selection of both sides, something that Briggenshaw noted as extremely important this year.

“That’s what it comes down to, the depth within the squad, we have a really strong squad, we have lots of players on the fringe trying to make it,” Briggenshaw added.

“No doubt you’re going to be using more than your top 18 for the whole series, I think for both teams it’s going to be survival of the fittest.”

The 2024 Ampol Women’s State of Origin series kicks-off on Thursday, May 16th at Suncorp Stadium before the series returns to Newcastle for Game II on the 6th of June.
