Parker declares Bennett's Souths return is imminent

2024-05-03T17:00+10:00

Brisbane Broncos legend Corey Parker has tipped an announcement on Wayne Bennett’s return to the South Sydney Rabbitohs is imminent.

The call comes after Parker predicted Bennett would replace Jason Demetriou, who was sacked by the Rabbitohs earlier this week, on SENQ as early as April 11, as well as Ben Hornby being in place as interim coach for the rest of the season.

After spending a large portion of his career under the current Dolphins coach, Parker once again cited the signing of English playmaker Lewis Dodd as one of the main reasons he believed Bennett was ready to move back into the top job at Redfern.

“It was inevitable, the fact that Jason Demetriou wasn’t going to be at the helm and that’s now come to fruition and Wayne has already made some inroads at Souths, he hasn’t put pen to paper yet but that’ll happen,” he said on SENQ Breakfast.

“There was some chatter around that (Bennett going to Parramatta) but I just think the fit for Wayne to go back to South Sydney will definitely be in there.

“If you look deeper into that, the signing of Lewis Dodd, who played under Kristian Woolf in the English Super League… that was from way left field and kept super quiet.

“I have no doubt that going forward, he’ll have his fingerprints over what Ben Horny does and what that team is about to progress on for the remainder of the season.

“I reckon it’ll be announced in the near future, within the next week also, maybe this time next week we will be saying Wayne has signed and will be the coach of South Sydney.”

The Rabbitohs lost their first game under Hornby in a 42-12 defeat at the hands of Penrith while Bennett and the Dolphins will take on the North Queensland Cowboys in Townsville on Saturday night.
