Who they missed: The five players who were overlooked by the coaches in Round 8

2024-05-08T08:13+10:00

Which players should have been given coaches votes for their Round 8 performances?

Champion Data’s Daniel Hoyne has named the five players who were perhaps overlooked by the coaches on the weekend.

The below guys rated in the top five of Champion Data’s ratings yet did not receive any votes.

See the five players below:

Brodie Grundy (Sydney)

“Fantastic bounce back after a poor performance against Lloyd Meek the week before,” Hoyne said on SEN’s Sportsday.

“Second best ruckman of the weekend. Fourth best player in that game.”

Seb Ross (St Kilda)

“Third highest rated player on the ground and eighth best midfielder for the weekend.

“His ball use was actually the surprise element to his game. Only Marcus Bontempelli had more impact from his ball use than what Seb Ross did.

“Hats off to him there.”

Clayton Oliver (Melbourne)

“This one I was absolutely staggered by - Clayton Oliver did not get a vote from the coaches.

“We had him as the highest rated player on the ground and the seventh best midfielder for the weekend.

“Back to his contested possession and ball winning best. Well done to Clayton.”

Tom Barrass (West Coast)

“He was fantastic against Essendon to hold up from 60 entries.

“He had 11 intercepts and nine spoils so basically killed 20 opportunities.

“Third best key defender from the weekend.”

Aaron Naughton (Western Bulldogs)

“Third highest rated player on the ground.

“I thought it was only him and ‘Bont’ that were the only ones that actually looked threatening.

“His season so far this year has actually gone under the radar a little bit.

“I know there has been a lot of talk around him going to defence, but what he’s doing ahead of the ball has been quite strong.”
