“Desperate to bring him back”: Rival club expected to make “monumental play” for Titans captain

2024-05-10T11:42+10:00

Following David Fifita’s decision to leave the Gold Coast, the Titans are being warned about the potential of also losing Tino Fa'asuamaleaui.

Brought to the club at the same time, Fa'asuamaleaui and Fifita were viewed as the beginning of a new era for the Gold Coast club. However, the Titans have struggled since their arrival, only making finals once in 2021.

Fa'asuamaleaui, the Titans captain, signed a long-term 10-year extension in August 2023, running until 2033. However, from 2027 onwards, Fa'asuamaleaui has player options every year onwards, meaning he could leave the club at the end of 2026.

In what would be a major blow to the Titans, Matty Johns has revealed he expects the Melbourne Storm to attempt to lure the Queensland representative back to the club he debuted with.

“I have no doubt the Melbourne Storm will make a monumental play for Tino,” Johns said on SEN 1170’s Morning Glory.

“When all this stuff was going on… there was talk around that the Melbourne Storm were circling then.

“They’re desperate to bring him back.”

The Storm have reportedly been looking to improve their forward pack by potentially bringing Tevita Pangai Junior out of retirement, and Fa'asuamaleaui would be an invaluable addition.

Denan Kemp said that, if the Titans don’t improve, he’d like to see Fa'asuamaleaui leave the club to achieve more success.

“I don’t want Tino at a club with the Titans struggling for the rest of his career,” Kemp added.

“He’s too good of a player to be battling 80 minutes at the bottom of the table for the next six years of his career.

“From a fan of Tino, I don’t want to see his career just battling away at the bottom of the table.”

Fa'asuamaleaui is currently recovering from an ACL injury he suffered in Round 3 and is out for the remainder of 2024.
