Grading every player in the ground in Port Adelaide's shocking win over Geelong

2024-05-10T22:05+10:00

Port Adelaide has stunned Geelong down at Kardinia Park, blowing them out in the first half to make a near-certainty of a crucial four points.

The Power kicked 12 goals to five in the first half and came out of the blocks firing, with Jason Horne-Francis, Zak Butters, Willie Rioli and Ollie Wines leading the way.

They went after Geelong champion Tom Stewart physically, limiting his impact on the game and dominated possession early – no Cat had more than 10 disposals to their name until the third quarter.

The Cats made a charge in the third term and got within a goal late, but had too much to do and the Power held on 101-95. The game felt a mirror of Thursday night's Carlton-Melbourne game.

We’ve graded every player on the ground – and it might make for tough reading if you’re a Geelong fan.

See them below:

GEELONG

Tyson Stengle - A

Kicked four goals and helped keep the Cats in the contest when it was looking grim.

Zach Guthrie - A

Continuing his stellar season. As Port put a ton of effort into restricting Tom Stewart's impact, Guthrie got off the chain again.

Max Holmes - B+

Works incredibly hard and continues to build his role across half back and the wing. Laid seven tackles as well.

Tom Atkins - B

A classic Tom Atkins performance. 16 disposals (9 contested), 11 tackles and six clearances.

Mark Blicavs - B

Forced to ruck the entire second half after Chris Scott made the call to sub out Rhys Stanley.

Mitch Duncan - B

Oliver Dempsey - B

Looks like a quality half forward/wingman of the future. Marks well, runs hard and finds space. Another Geelong diamond in the rough.

Gryan Miers - B

By the standards he has set for himself over the last 18 months, it was a quieter evening for the goal assistant king.

Jake Kolodjashnij - B

Despite Port's dominance, was rarely beaten one-on-one.

Brad Close - B-

Kicked his two goals to go with five score involvements.

Oisin Mullin - B-

Came on as the sub in the second quarter as Chris Scott looked to change the look of the game. He played close attention to Jason Horne-Francis and certainly limited his impact.

Brandan Parfitt - C+

10 tackles and a goal assist, but a quieter night otherwise. Still putting together his best season of footy.

Mark O'Connor - C+

Gary Rohan - C+

Most of his disposals ended up score involvements and kicked two, but didn't was reasonably quiet.

Sam De Koning - C+

Jeremy Cameron - C+

Had a few hard landings in this one. Looks sore. Outside of the Carlton game, he has had a pretty quiet stretch.

Jack Henry - C+

Cameron Guthrie - C

Yet to find form since returning from injury. The Cats need more from Guthrie, particularly in Patrick Dangerfield's absence.

Tom Hawkins - C

His quiet month continued in his record-equalling game. Well-held by Ratugolea.

Tom Stewart - C

Port Adelaide targeted the Geelong champion, with Jed McEntee tagging him and limiting his impact across the night.

Jhye Clark - D

Oliver Henry - D

Missed a crucial set shot in the dying moments. Very quiet night.

Rhys Stanley - N/A

Clearly wasn't doing something right as Chris Scott subbed him out early in the second term.

PORT ADELAIDE

Willie Rioli - A+

Potentially his best game in Port Adelaide colours! 4.3 to his name and two goal assists.

Zak Butters - A+

Set the tone early and continues to add strings to his bow. Takes ground with the ball, makes good decisions and is clearly one of the game's elite mids.

Ollie Wines - A

With Connor Rozee out of the side, Wines was called upon to turn the clock back and fill the void. He certainly did.

Jason Horne-Francis - A-

Helped set up the win with a dominant first half out of the middle. He just gets better every week and looms as a future superstar midfielder. Tagged by Mullin in the second half.

Willem Drew - B+

Continues to build upon what has been a breakout season for the inside midfielder.

Esava Ratugolea - B+

Coming up against his old side, he would have been feeling the pressure. He did a great job on Tom Hawkins across the night.

Jed McEntee - B+

Played a defensive forward role on Tom Stewart, limiting him to just a couple of intercept marks and ultimately leaving the star defender frustrated.

Kane Farrell - B+

Two goals and over 400 metres gained. Port Adelaide needs to get the ball in his hands more often.

Jackson Mead - B

Added a bit of pace on-ball and changed up the dynamic at stages.

Dante Visentini - B

Port's third-string ruckman stood up and had a great night. Did the Power really need to trade for two other rucks over summer?

Dan Houston - B

24 disposals and nine marks, but a quieter night for Dan Houston on expectation.

Brandon Zerk-Thatcher - B

Quietly putting together a career-best season is the key defender.

Travis Boak - B

Still having an impact and earning his spot in this Port Adelaide best 23.

Mitch Georgiades C+

Aliir Aliir - C+

Certainly not a dominant night for Aliir, but did his job.

Ryan Burton - C+

Darcy Byrne-Jones - C+

Kicked two goals and provided some forward pressure.

Josh Sinn - C+

Yet to establish himself at AFL level, but had a decent night. Found some footy and gained nearly 400m with it.

Miles Bergman - C

A quiet night for Bergman coming off an outstanding performance in the Showdown.

Todd Marshall - C

Charlie Dixon - C-

Charlie Dixon was one of the few who didn't cash in on the Port dominance. Subbed out in the fourth term likely to add some run.

Jeremy Finlayson - C-

Francis Evans - N/A

Subbed in halfway through the fourth term.
