The Crows' Collingwood curse continued on Saturday when the Pies produced yet another thrilling comeback win over the Crows making Adelaide’s finals aspirations seem slim.
Adelaide’s four-point loss to the Pies ended in dramatic circumstances with a late goal from Jordan De Goey being the final dagger to a brave Adelaide performance.
It marks a ninth straight loss to the Magpies in a row and another tight finish.
Crows midfielder Rory Laird was left frustrated after the tight loss to the pies “really stung” and has damaged the Crows chances of September action.
“It would be nice to be on the other end and get them for once,” Laird told SEN SA.
“You can’t give up a lead like that and make it easy for yourself.”
Just minutes before the final siren Adelaide star Izak Rankine was penalised by the umpire for running too far, causing a brutal turnover which saw the Pies hit the front.
Laird expressed his annoyance, given the state of the game, even if the call was technically correct.
“When you look at it and break it down in slow motion it’s 24.2 metres, but in the game you sort of let that go don’t you?”
“I saw him take a bounce and thought he's all sweet here, but the thing with Izak is he's travelling further and faster than most people with the ball.”
To make matters worse for the Crows, Rankine suffered a hamstring injury late in the game which will see him miss approximately three weeks of football.
Following Saturday’s loss, the Crows sit 13th on the ladder with just three wins.
However, Laird still remains optimistic about what his side can achieve as they look towards the second half of the year.
“It’s a very even slate of teams who are 5-14th, so if there’s any season to sort of look into and have an opportunity to fight back in the second half of the year then this is probably the best opportunity in a long time.”
“We have really made it hard for ourselves and the weekend adds a little bit of salt into the wounds, it was another opportunity to stay closer to the competition and we have made it difficult.”
Laird and the Crows now look towards a do or die clash with the inform West Coast Eagles at Adelaide oval on Sunday as they look to get their season back on track.
