What all 18 clubs must do to receive a pass mark in 2024 according to Dwayne Russell

SEN Afternoons host Dwayne Russell has listed what he feels all 18 AFL clubs must do across the rest of the 2024 season to receive a pass mark.

Whether it’s to make a Grand Final, play in September or win a certain number of games, Russell has given teams a pass mark level to reach with six home and away fixtures plus finals remaining in the campaign.

He gave his pass marks while looking at the ladder after Round 18, going from number one in Sydney all the way down to last which is Richmond.

Make a Grand Final

Sydney (1st, 14-3)
Carlton (2nd, 11-6)
Brisbane (4th, 10-6-1)

“To make a Grand Final I think is the pass mark for Sydney, Carlton and Brisbane,” Russell said on SEN Afternoons.

Make a Preliminary Final

Geelong (3rd, 11-6)
Fremantle (5th, 10-6-1)
Essendon (6th, 10-6-1)
GWS (7th, 10-7)
Melbourne (8th, 10-7)
Port Adelaide (9th, 10-7)
Western Bulldogs (10th, 9-8)

“I've got these teams in the bracket of having to make a Prelim.

“Geelong, Essendon, Fremantle, the Giants, Melbourne, Port Adelaide and the Bulldogs.

“That might be a bit harsh for some, but they’ll want to make a Prelim final.”

Make the top eight

Gold Coast (11th, 9-8)
Collingwood (12th, 8-7-2)

“The Suns and Collingwood … their pass mark is to make the eight.”

Already passed

Hawthorn (13th, 9-8)

“Hawthorn I think have already passed with nine wins.”

One loss away from failing

Adelaide (14th, 6-10-1)
St Kilda (15th 6-11)

“For Adelaide, it’s going to be hard for them to pass 11 wins last year.

“They've got 6.5 wins now. So, they’re going to struggle to equal last year unless they have a big run of wins on the way home. Adelaide's on track to not pass this year.

“St Kilda won 13 games last year and they’ve got six wins with six games to play. I can’t see St Kilda passing.”

Two more wins

North Melbourne (17th, 2-15)

“I think North Melbourne still needs two more wins.

“They won three games last year and they've got two wins so far this year. I think they still need two more for a pass to jump up to four wins.”

Already failed

West Coast (16th, 3-14)
Richmond (18th, 2-15)

“Richmond and West Coast are those that have already got an ‘F’ next to their name given their seasons so far.”
