SEN’s Dwayne Russell has implored the AFL to avoid overlapping fixtures.
He has urged the competition’s Executive General Manager, Laura Kane, and league CEO, Andrew Dillon, to amend the fixture issue of games being scheduled at the same time.
This coming weekend, Friday night hosts Western Bulldogs v Melbourne at Marvel Stadium from 7:15pm AEST before West Coast v Gold Coast kicks off in Perth at 8:30pm AEST.
Then on Saturday night, the first bounce of the Collingwood v Carlton MCG blockbuster is set for 7:30pm AEST - the same time as Port Adelaide v Sydney in Adelaide.
Russell was responding to multiple SEN listeners who texted in about the Saturday night double header, admitting he cannot make sense of overlapping fixtures which potentially stems from no Thursday night footy.
“It’s crazy that they’ve got overlapping games again this week,” Russell said on SEN’s Dwayne’s World.
“This week you’ve got an overlapping game on a Friday night and an overlapping game on a Saturday night.
“They’ve got to fix this, the AFL. Laura and Andrew, if you’re listening to this - please, please, please listen to this - we want Thursday night footy on a regular basis next year. We don’t want overlapping games.
“There is a way to spread the games on a Saturday and Sunday so they don’t overlap. It’s crazy that you hide games. Why would you hide games from fans? Why wouldn’t you let every fan watch every game if they want to?”
Russell added: “I can’t make sense of it because it does not make sense.”
The lack of Thursday night football in the second half of the season has been puzzling to most footy fans, as has the number of games which go up against each other throughout the course of the season.
