Despite Carlton’s recent lack of form, Champion Data’s Daniel Hoyne is confident that history is on their side and they will still make a deep run in September.
Carlton currently sits fourth on the ladder and are in the middle of a form slump having lost three of their last four games.
Alarm bells are ringing for the Blues as their dominant season is beginning to fade, however, Hoyne suggests Blues fans shouldn't be too worried as one key stat still indicates they have what it takes.
“This might sound ridiculous, but I'm not panicking, and I’m not jumping off Carlton at all,” Hoyne told SEN's Sportsday.
“They are the number one turnover team in the competition, they have well and truly overtaken Sydney in the turnover game.
“In the last 20 years, the number one turnover team in the competition has made the Preliminary Final 19 out of 20 years and made the Grand Final 14 out of 20 years. Only once have they not reached the Preliminary Final.
“17 of the last 18 premiers have been top three in the turnover game.
“I'll back history until history changes.”
Hoyne pointed out where it is going wrong for the Blues right now, highlighting a glaring statistic about Carlton’s inability to stop opposition scoring from defensive 50 stoppage.
“It is so frustrating to watch what is happening at this stoppage situation,” he added.
“They’ve conceded close to 10 goals more than any other team in the competition from defensive 50 stoppages, which should be the easiest part of the ground to defend.
“You should be giving up one goal a week at most.”
Carlton will face Collingwood this Saturday night in a crucial Round 21 clash at the MCG.
The Blues will attempt to get their season back on track and upset the Magpie army as they celebrate Scott Pendlebury’s 400th game.
