“Rugby league doesn't define you”: Israel Dagg's heartfelt advice to Shaun Johnson

We always wondered who would be the next general for the Warriors, the next Stacey Jones, who could lead us to glory.

Fast forward to 2011 when a young kid from Whangaparaoa burst onto the scene, his name? Shaun Johnson!

It felt like we were watching a clone of Benji Marshall running around in a Warriors jersey - the way he played the game brought so much joy to fans like myself. His step was something we could only dream of, his vision rivalled the great film directors, and his unpredictability even confused and astonished his teammates.

Johnson will undoubtedly go down as one of the greatest Warriors, amassing over 200 first-grade games and 32 test for the Kiwis.

His decision to hang up the boots wouldn't have been easy, I've been there, it's bloody hard.

Rugby league is all he's known - the changing sheds with the lads, the banter, the adrenaline rushes from running out to a packed-out Mt Smart, the friendships forged - these are the things that will be running through SJ's mind.

But Shaun Johnson, if I could give you one piece of advice, it's this: this isn't retirement, it's just the end of one chapter.

Rugby league doesn't define you, it's just a small part of who you are. You're a husband, a father, and your journey is just beginning.

As you step away from the field, remember that the skills, the resilience and passion you've shown will serve you well in whatever comes next.
