Why former AFL star believes “impassable” Andrews has singlehandedly saved Brisbane's faltering season

Harris Andrews almost singlehandedly saved Brisbane in the 2023 Preliminary Final against Carlton, and he has done so again for their season in 2024.

That is the opinion of Josh Jenkins, who believes the Lions’ faltering campaign would have collapsed if not for the star key defender and co-captain.

The Lions were winless after three rounds this season and 2-5 after Round 7, with many believing the pre-season premiership favourites to be out of the mix.

They have clearly rebounded strongly, now sitting second and are into premiership favouritism once again.

“Brisbane, by my calculation, have about eight less wins this season without Harris Andrews saving the day,” Jenkins told SEN’s The Run Home.

“If it wasn’t for him keeping them afloat, their teetering season would have fallen completely off the cliff.

“The data is this – he has been in 76 one-on-one contests this year and he has lost three per cent of them.

“So he stops you, while also leading the competition in intercept marks. The man is impassable.

“He is a superstar. He’s actually my favourite player and he’s a bloody key defender.

“I love watching him play. I think he’ll beat Lachie Neale for the best and fairest this year.”

Andrews and the Lions face GWS at the Gabba on Saturday in an enormous game in the context of shaping this year’s ladder.
